CHOREOGRAPHY IN EDUCATION
We have choreographed on conservatoire, university, CAT scheme students, and youth dance companies including, 3 choreographic commissions on students at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. These have ranged from work on the dancing plague, capitalism and work, silent movies and 27 lonely yet resourceful, cabaret performers trying to restage a show in a pandemic.
“Such an amazing project and piece, it was the best part of the year and I loved it! You made rehearsals fun!”
NSCD BA1 Student
A commission from Northern School of Contemporary Dance to create a film with their first year dance students in 2021, exploring power, work, joy, hope, and the end of the world - created in part during a Covid 19 lockdown.
Wanted for The End:
Power poses.
Strong arms.
A significant lack of inhibition.
Meet at 5pm on the steps. Must bring own sequins. Wear a mask.
Join our band of cartoon-like misfits dancing for the end of the world.
Directed by Gracefool Collective in collaboration with the students
Gracefool Collective in collaboration with the NSCD Cert HE 2020 students. A choreographic commission in lockdown.
In 2020, our entire reality shifted. Artists are a resilient, pragmatic and innovative species, but it’s hard to find motivation or creativity in the face of such uncertainty.
Along with students from NSCD’s Cert HE programme we created a selection of performances about how we carry on performing when the world turns upside down. Finding beauty in failure, humour in struggle and poignancy in the messiness and chaos of 2020. Performed live to family, friends and neighbours, and where this was not possible; cuddly toys, glass bottles, cans of deodorant and a Google home assistant.
A choreographic commission for students from the New Education for Contemporary Dance course at the Härnösands Folkhögskola, Sweden, based on the 2003 science fiction anthology film, The Animatrix. We created a duet and a quintet exploring power dynamics, ego, film noir and incompetent detectives. Performed at Västernorrlands Museum, Härnösands.
An original commission from NSCD for the BPA1 Student Showcase.
Enter The Workplace, where human machinery reach for relief in surreal fantasy. Time passes, the day continues, monotony transforms into reverie and back again.
Clocking in, gloves on, mind off.
Then again. But with jazz hands.
Choreographed by Gracefool Collective in collaboration with the students.
“Thank you so much for this crazy, inspirational experience! It has truly been one of a kind & I have loved exploring a world different to our own!”
“Thanks to you I discovered a new side of myself”
NSCD BA1 Student
An original commission from NSCD for the Foundation Course end of year show. A piece about dance mania, dance marathons, and the madness of crowds. An epidemic of nervous hysteria and mad desire.
Watch the poison of melancholy, stupor and madness rise quickly though their bodies. observe their gesticulations, hallucinations, contortions and cries and witness the frenzy of their disobedient limbs.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, How Long Can They Last?"
Choreographed by Gracefool Collective in collaboration with the students.
“Thanks for an amazing process. You guys are weird and cool.”
