KICK OFF

“I’ve never danced before, but this is what has been missing from my life”

– Kick off Performer

Kick Off is a bold and joyful promenade dance theatre piece created for the Leeds 2023 cultural programme, with an intergenerational cast of 27 women and girls from across Leeds aged 10-85. Drawing on the physicality of football and the history of women’s protest & activism, Kick Off sees a defiant, euphoric throng of women, girls and non-binary people parading through the streets and into a city park, forming and organising as if they were both playing a match and taking part in a protest. They share tactics, shout instructions and commentate; on each other, the audience and their environment. They roar rewritten football chants, blow whistles and cheer, offering an alternative to the noise of “lads lads lads” and proposing a future of loud, unapologetic, defiant women; taking space, supporting one another and ‘misbehaving’ in public. An original score was composed for the work and developed with the community cast by acclaimed composer Beibei Wang.

PARTICIPANT QUOTES

“I've been performing since I was a young teenager (I'm now 47) and this is one of the most enjoyable, memorable and meaningful performances in which I've ever been involved.”

– Kick off Performer

“I am enjoying my retirement because of meeting Kate and Izzy and Rachel and them saying to us: do what you want in this space, we’re not judging you, we want you to have fun, play. We are giving you permission to play. We are giving you a voice. We want to hear what you have to say. You are important, don’t hide away, come out and be part of the world. So my world has expanded... and I didn’t expect that... I am amazed at what I’ve achieved because of these wonderful artists that we’re given the opportunity to work with.”

“I am so happy and honoured that I could be part of Kick Off. This experience is something I have never had before. I will remember the feeling and everyone for all my life.”

AUDIENCE QUOTES

“(Kick Off) is a work that starts as a dance piece, a work of art and a political march that turns to a football chant and back to dance. The audience watched, followed, joined in, laughed and clapped and had a thoroughly good time.”

“Kick Off was simply marvellous. Across all ages of folk. Learning unknown local history of soccer suffragettes”

“It was amazing to see the show in all its glory on Friday… so joyous but also so moving, educational, inspiring...”
